July 18, 2024 – It’s a common dream among young people in athletics, to one day take their skills to a professional level. To be called to play on a major baseball team is unimaginably difficult, and so when local heroes do just that it’s time to celebrate.

Former Viera Hawks pitcher Dylan Jordan was chosen by the Los Angeles Angels in the 5th round of the MLB Draft, as the 143rd overall pick.

Former VHS catcher Alan Espinal was called up in the 11th round of Major League Baseball’s draft as the third pick by the Colorado Rockies, making him the fourth VHS player ever to be drafted.

As a junior at VHS, Jordan was on the team that finished as a state runner-up, and he was on the mound when Viera took another district title for his senior year.

Espinal was behind the plate when the Hawks reached the regional final in his junior year. Although COVID cut short his senior year, he went on to distinguish himself at Vanderbilt.

Viera congratulates the 6-foot-3, 205 pound right-hander Jordan as he heads to the show. Also kudos to 6-foot, 214 pound Espinal who has proven that hard work pays off.  It’s a dream come true.
